What is ASUME?
ASUME is a system for building and maintaining an evidence-grounded understanding of companies. That understanding can be reused across questions, assumptions, objectives, teams, workflows, applications, and agents.
At a high level, ASUME separates company information from the understanding derived from it, and separates that understanding from the objective for which it is later used:
Company information → Evidence → AUM → Understanding → Objective → Output
The Assumptive Understanding Model, or AUM, is the computational framework ASUME uses to construct, maintain, and revise this understanding.
What does ASUME understand?
Much of what matters about a company is not stated directly in any single source. Its needs, capabilities, constraints, priorities, relationships, and other aspects of its current state may have to be established or inferred from information distributed across different places.
ASUME organizes these supported and inferred propositions into a structured company understanding. The result is not simply a collection of documents, search results, or a company summary. It is a maintained interpretation of what the available evidence currently supports about the company and how the different parts of that interpretation relate.
How does ASUME build understanding?
ASUME reasons from information it is permitted to access and use. This may include publicly available company information as well as Customer-provided or Customer-authorised sources, subject to the permissions granted to the Service.
Information does not automatically become understanding. ASUME identifies evidence within that information, reasons over the evidence, and uses explicit assumptions where something required for a line of reasoning is not sufficiently established. AUM preserves the relationships between evidence, assumptions, inferences, and resulting propositions rather than reducing them to a final piece of generated text.
This allows ASUME to distinguish between what is supported by available evidence, what has been inferred from it, what depends on an assumption, and what remains uncertain.
The understanding is maintained
Companies change, so an understanding of a company cannot be treated as permanent. New information may strengthen an existing proposition, support a new one, challenge something currently held, or change an assumption used in previous reasoning.
ASUME maintains the understanding as these changes occur. Because the relevant dependencies are preserved, a change does not necessarily require the entire company to be reconstructed from the beginning. The affected parts can be reconsidered while other supported parts remain intact.
This is the difference between repeatedly reconstructing company context:
Question → Search → Generate → Start again
and maintaining company understanding:
Information → Understand → Maintain → Revise → Reuse
Understanding first, objective second
Understanding a company and deciding what matters about that company for a particular purpose are separate problems.
ASUME first builds and maintains the company understanding. An objective then determines what should be derived from that understanding for a particular purpose.
Understand the company first → Apply the objective second
Changing the objective does not require ASUME to construct a different version of the company. Instead, the objective determines which parts of the existing understanding are relevant, what additional reasoning should be performed, and what output should be produced.
The same maintained understanding can therefore support different questions, objectives, teams, applications, and agents without requiring the company to be independently researched and reconstructed for each task.
ASUME's core idea is simple: understand the company once, maintain that understanding as the company changes, and reason over it for different purposes.
